Official Registrar General Requirements

The Official Requirements for a Bahamas Marriage License

These are the requirements as defined by the Bahamas Registrar General’s Department. Glenn confirms your exact list before you travel based on your nationalities and specific circumstances.

  1. 1

Both Parties Must Be Present in The Bahamas

Both parties must be physically present in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas at the time of the application. This is non-negotiable — a proxy application is not permitted.

  2. 2

Residency Requirement — 24 Hours Before Applying

Both parties must be present in The Bahamas for at least 24 hours before applying for the marriage license. Couples arriving by cruise ship can count time spent in Bahamian waters toward this requirement. The license is typically issued same day or next business day after application. The license is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

  3. 3

Minimum Age 18 — Parental Consent If Under 18

If either party is a minor (under 18 years of age), written parental consent is required. Consent forms are available from the Registrar General’s office.

  4. 4

Previously Divorced — Final Decree Absolute Required

If either party has been divorced, the original final decree absolute or a certified copy with a raised or coloured seal must be produced. For European residents, the decree must be produced in the native language along with a certified or notarised English translation. Interim decrees and conditional orders are not accepted.

  5. 5

Previously Widowed — Death Certificate Required

If either party is widowed, the death certificate of the deceased spouse must be produced. This must be an official certificate. Non-English certificates require a certified translation.

  6. 6

Single Status Declaration — US Citizens and Residents

If either party is unmarried, an affidavit of single status must be completed through a Bahamian Notary Public in Nassau ($95 — Glenn arranges this for all his clients). Note: the US Embassy in Nassau no longer provides this service for any nationality.

  7. 7

Single Status Declaration — Non-US Citizens

If either party is unmarried and is not a US citizen or resident, a declaration certifying single status must be sworn before a Notary Public or other authorised person in their home country, and must accompany the marriage license application. The declaration may also be obtained from a Notary Public in Nassau.

  8. 8

Valid Passport and Full Birth Certificate

Both parties must produce a valid passport (for Commonwealth residents, a passport is required; for others, a valid passport or government-issued photo ID). Both parties must also produce a full/long-form birth certificate showing their parents’ names. A short-form birth certificate without parents’ names will be rejected by the Registrar General. Obtain the full version from your home country vital records office before you travel.

  9. 9

Proof of Arrival Date in The Bahamas

Both parties must produce evidence of the date of their arrival in The Bahamas — for example, an airline ticket or immigration card. This supports the residency or waiver requirement.

  10. 10

Out Island Ceremonies — Local Commissioner’s Office

Couples wishing to marry on a Family Island (any island outside of New Providence or Grand Bahama — e.g. Exuma, Eleuthera, Harbour Island) can obtain the marriage license at the Commissioner’s Office on that island and do not need to travel to Nassau.

  11. 11

Marriage License Fee: $100 — Valid 90 Days

The government fee for a Bahamas marriage license is $100 USD, payable at the Registrar General’s Department (or Commissioner’s Office for Out Islands). The license is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. No blood test is required.

Online applications: If you submit an online application for a marriage license, you must still bring the printed, signed, and witnessed paper application to the Registrar General’s office. Online submission grants priority status and reduces processing time.

What to Bring — Bahamas Marriage License Document Table

Use this table to prepare your documents before you travel. The “If Required” column tells you exactly which situations trigger each document.

Document Status Who Needs It Important Notes
Passport Required Both parties (Commonwealth residents) Must be valid and government-issued. Primary ID for Commonwealth nationals. Passport stamped by Bahamas Immigration showing date of entry is accepted as proof of arrival.
Birth Certificate (full/long-form) Required Both parties Must be full/long-form showing parents’ names. Short-form birth certificates without parents’ names are rejected by the Registrar General. Obtain from your home country vital records office before you travel.
Government-Issued Photo ID Required Both parties (non-Commonwealth) Any government-issued photo ID from country of residence. Passport recommended for all.
Proof of Arrival Date Required Both parties Airline ticket or immigration card showing date of arrival in The Bahamas.
Affidavit of Single Status (all nationalities) Required All unmarried applicants Completed through a Bahamian Notary Public in Nassau ($95). Glenn arranges this for all his clients. Note: the US Embassy in Nassau no longer provides this service for any nationality.
Final Divorce Decree Absolute If Divorced Either party previously divorced Original or certified copy with raised or coloured seal. For European residents: native language copy plus certified/notarised English translation. Interim decrees not accepted.
Death Certificate of Former Spouse If Widowed Either party previously widowed Official certificate required. Non-English certificates need a certified translation.
Certified English Translation If Applicable Non-English documents Any document not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation. Arrange before you travel.
Parental Consent Form If Under 18 Either party under 18 Written parental consent required. Forms available from the Registrar General’s office.
Cruise Letter Cruise Arrivals Couples arriving by cruise ship Official letter from cruise line confirming time in Bahamian waters. Glenn provides exact required wording. Cruise wedding guide →
Most common failure: Previously divorced applicants who arrive without the final certified divorce decree absolute. This document cannot be sourced in The Bahamas — it must come from your home country. Confirm your complete document list with Glenn before you travel.

"The requirement that trips people up the most is the divorce decree. I have had couples arrive in Nassau with a conditional decree, a court order referencing the divorce, or a certificate from their solicitor — none of which are accepted. The Registrar General requires the original final decree absolute or a certified copy with a raised or coloured seal. Nothing else. If you were divorced in Europe, you also need a certified English translation alongside the native-language document. I check every client’s document list before they travel specifically to prevent this problem. One phone call before you book your flights prevents a failed application on the day."

Bahamian Nationals

Marriage License Requirements for Bahamian Nationals

The requirements differ slightly for Bahamian citizens. These apply when at least one party is a Bahamian national.

  • 1

    Government-Issued Photo ID

Passport, Voter’s Card, or Driver’s Licence. Any government-issued ID with a photograph is acceptable for Bahamian applicants.

  • 2

    Previously Divorced

The original or certified copy of the Decree Absolute is the only document accepted. No other form of divorce documentation is valid.

  • 3

    Previously Widowed

The original or certified copy of the Death Certificate of the former spouse is required.

  • 4

Age 40+ and Single — Mandatory Search

If either applicant is aged 40 years or older and single, a mandatory search of marriage records is required. A minimum of two weeks is necessary for the search. The license is issued only after the search is completed.

  • 5

    Non-Bahamian Applicant — Mandatory Interview

If either applicant is not a citizen of The Bahamas, a mandatory interview is required before the license is issued.

Planning around the mandatory search: If either party is a Bahamian national aged 40+ and single, the two-week search window must be factored into your planning timeline. This is a legal requirement that cannot be waived or shortened. Glenn advises Bahamian couples on the exact sequence and timeline.
